Google Wallet for Kids: Empowering Children with Safe and Secure Payments
Google is introducing a new feature to Google Wallet, allowing children to make purchases in stores using their Android devices managed by Family Link. This expansion comes after the successful adoption of payments on Fitbit Ace LTE devices.
Safety First: A Gradual Rollout with Parental Controls
Google emphasizes that the new feature has been designed with safety as a priority. It will initially be available to a limited number of Google Wallet users in several countries, including the United States, next year, before being rolled out to a wider audience. Parents must approve each credit or debit card added to their child's phone, mirroring the process for Fitbit Ace LTE devices. They can also view recent transaction history, remove cards, or remotely restrict payments through the Family Link app.
Expanding Payment Options for Young Users
Children can add any existing payment cards to their wallet. The Google Wallet for kids will also support gift cards and event tickets. However, identification cards and health cards will not be supported at launch. For online payments, children simply need to click to use their saved cards in Google Wallet.
A Gradual Approach for Responsible Digital Payments
Google's measured approach to rolling out this feature, starting with a limited release before wider adoption, demonstrates a commitment to safety and responsible digital payments. This allows Google to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments before making the feature widely accessible.
This new service offers an opportunity to introduce children to the world of digital payments while giving parents peace of mind. It also provides a glimpse into the future of digital payments for young people.
