NVIDIA Joins Dow Jones Index, Replacing Intel
In a significant shift for the leading index, NVIDIA has replaced Intel as a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, marking a move towards artificial intelligence over struggling semiconductor companies.
Intel's shares decreased by 1% in extended trading on Friday, while NVIDIA's shares rose by 1%, according to CNBC Arabic.
The switch is scheduled to take effect on November 8th. In a separate move, Sherwin Williams will replace Dow Inc., according to a statement from S&P Dow Jones Indices.
NVIDIA's stock has risen by more than 180% in 2024 as investors see the company as a major beneficiary of the artificial intelligence boom. Conversely, Intel's stock has fallen by 51% this year, facing manufacturing challenges, new competition in its central processing unit market, and a perceived miss on the AI trend.
The Dow Jones index includes 30 companies, and its weighting is based on individual stock prices rather than the total market value of the companies.
With the inclusion of NVIDIA, four out of the six trillion-dollar technology companies are now listed in the index.
