Carotenoid-Rich Foods
Foods rich in carotenoids include carrots, squash, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, papaya, tomatoes, spinach, and kale. So, not all carotenoids are orange. Some forms convert into vitamin A in the body.
Carotenoids and Skin Health
Nutrition expert Kate Taylor, in an interview with Newsweek, noted that a diet consistently incorporating fruits and vegetables containing colorful carotenoids can contribute to a healthy skin appearance because they are also anti-inflammatory antioxidants.
"Prolonged inflammation can dull the skin's glow. As someone with eczema, I know this firsthand. So, it's not just about carotenoids but about carotenoid-rich foods in general," Taylor said.
Carotenoid Overconsumption
On the other hand, excessive intake of carotenoids can lead to yellowing or orange discoloration of the skin, a condition known as carotenemia. There is some evidence that lower levels of carotenoids might have a similar but milder effect.
Other Carotenoids for Skin Health
Taylor told Newsweek that some evidence supports the idea that certain carotenoids – specifically lycopene found in tomatoes and astaxanthin found in seafood and algae – may promote overall skin health and radiance.

The American Academy of Dermatology's website highlights some practices that can enhance skin health, including:
- Protect your skin from the sun.
- Use sunscreen daily.
