Samsung Surpasses Apple: Galaxy Phones Become Bestsellers in 2024
The global smartphone market is slowly recovering, reaching its highest performance in the third quarter since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Canalys, smartphone manufacturers shipped nearly 310 million units, the best result since July-September 2021.
Samsung Dominates Sales
Samsung remained the top-selling smartphone manufacturer in the third quarter of 2024, with Apple trailing by only one percentage point. Xiaomi came in third place, just 4 percentage points behind the leader.
Samsung saw a two-point drop in its market share, despite simplifying its product lineup for beginners. Apple, driven by the debut of the iPhone 16 series, came close to the top spot. Canalys noted that Apple managed to ship older units, such as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 15, to the Indian market, boosting its market share.
Future Projections and Market Trends
Apple is projected to take the lead in the fourth quarter of 2024, but with a smaller margin than usual due to delays in launching Apple Intelligence AI features. Chinese companies Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo adopted different approaches to boosting their shipments.
Xiaomi leveraged its presence in the open market and brand stores, while Oppo rebranded its A3 series and achieved success in Southeast Asia in the $100-200 price segment. Vivo’s V40 series helped the company strengthen its presence across multiple markets. The five different mid-range phones, with similar names and appearances, attracted consumer attention in various markets.
Regions like Asia Pacific and Latin America saw the largest increases in shipments. They outperformed the overall market, driven by increased price competition and channel incentives in the beginner segment. Canalys warned that affordable phones may be vital for volume and market share, but inflationary pressures limit companies' profitability.
Looking Ahead to 2025
The outlook for 2025 remains cautiously optimistic. Mature markets like the United States, China, and Western Europe will see growth in the premium segment through AI-powered devices. Meanwhile, companies like Vivo and Honor are expanding their mid-range portfolios through innovative channel strategies, including pop-up stores and partnerships with carriers, to upgrade from the $100-200 price segment.
