Palestine Calls for Ceasefire and End to Israeli Occupation During Meeting with Luxembourg Foreign Minister
Support for Ceasefire and Prisoner Release
Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Shtayyeh, expressed support for all efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire and the release of all prisoners, stating that these actions would pave the way for a political path towards a comprehensive solution that would end the occupation and realize the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. During a meeting with Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Xavier Bettel, in Ramallah, Shtayyeh emphasized the urgent need for an end to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, particularly highlighting the high number of civilian casualties, including women and children.
Concerns Regarding UNRWA Funding
Shtayyeh expressed Palestinian rejection and condemnation of the Israeli legislation aimed at banning the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This legislation would deprive Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of vital services provided by UNRWA, which is currently the sole provider of humanitarian aid and services in the Gaza Strip due to the limited presence of the Palestinian government. Shtayyeh called on the European Union and its member states to impose sanctions on Israel, compel Israel to comply with international law, and exert further pressure to stop all Israeli deductions from Palestinian tax revenues and release all withheld funds. He also commended Luxembourg's efforts and positive stance in supporting a ceasefire, halting the aggression against the Palestinian people, and providing continued financial support to UNRWA.
Luxembourg's Position on the Conflict
Bettel expressed Luxembourg's support for efforts to achieve a ceasefire, release prisoners, and end the humanitarian suffering in the Gaza Strip, as well as halting the escalation in the region as a whole. He reaffirmed Luxembourg's support for the Palestinian people's right to an independent state and its commitment to providing financial support to UNRWA and its international mandate and authority, in line with international law and UN resolutions.
